Mid-week Masterclasses with Annie Smithers
We are huge fans of du Fermier, Annie Smithers’ French farmhouse kitchen restaurant in the heart of Trentham. Annie runs a series of themed mid-week cooking masterclasses throughout the year. Her classes sell out at lightning speed, so we recommend getting in fast!
Why not combine a masterclass at du Fermier with a mid-week stay at The French House for the ultimate French provincial experience?
Sunday wine and wanderings
Opened in July 2018, the rail joins Bullarto with Daylesford in a scenic 17 min heritage rail journey through farmlands and old goldfields.
For train tickets only, book here: http://www.dscr.com.au/sunday-trains.php
Stop for lunch and tasting at Passing Clouds winery, who – as well as building their very own quaint train station for visitors to the estate – have partnered with the Daylesford Spa Country Rail to create a delightful package for the foodie and brocanteur to WINE + DINE + TRAVEL to the Daylesford Sunday market. Bookings are essential via phone (03) 5348 5550
Our recommendation would be to make an active day of it. Don your trendy activewear and work up your appetite along the 12km trail from Trentham to Bullarto station, jumping on for one stop to Passing Clouds. If that all sounds too sporty, leave your car at the winery (as the responsible driver you are!).
SPUDFEST – typically the first Saturday in May – This vibrant festival recognises and celebrates Trentham’s potato-growing heritage! Fun for all ages! http://trenthamspudfest.org.au
WHOLE TOWN GARAGE SALE – 1st Saturday in December – pick up your map from the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre first thing Saturday morning and drive your way to participating addresses. Many treasures to be found!
Other local favourites
FRYERSTOWN ANTIQUE FAIR – held in late January every year at the Burke & Wills Hall, Fryerstown. Fryerstown is 50 minutes drive from The French House. The annual antique fair is including in this list because we sourced many of the furniture items you see in the house from here. If you love vintage and antiques like we do, then this fair is a MUST. Savvy collectors confess that they go on the Thursday when the stallholders are setting up. We think this is a bit cheeky, so highly recommend going on the Friday to snap up the best items.
COUNTRY RACING – year round at Kyneton Park, Kyneton (15 minutes drive from The French House). If you haven’t yet experienced country racing, then you must give it a try. It’s something altogether different from the Melbourne racing scene – you’ll find a relaxed and friendly atmosphere right out of the gates, so to speak! Take a picnic, have a punt and enjoy the buzz. Perfect for those hen’s or buck’s weekends! Check out upcoming race events here http://www.countryracing.com.au/nmit-kyneton-park-racing-club
